Supplemental Dental Insurance
If you are like most Americans with health insurance you might think your teeth are covered. Truth of the matter is that you may need
Supplemental Dental Insurance because the reality is that most health plans do a poor job at covering dental if they are even covering anything at all.
And in the event that you actually have
dental included in your health policy, you may be devastated to see how little is actually covered under it. For that reason many people look to find a supplemental policy to help them cover the added expense.
A good
Supplemental Dental Insurance policy may help you cover your expenses out of pocket and even lower your actual costs by participating in various dental plans. It is not meant to be a primary plan but is designed more to help you fill the gaps that are left by the primary plan and alleviate the financial issues left by that gap. In short it supplements the primary policy and works hand in hand with it to help
lower costs associated with dental work.
There are several different plans that are considered to be
Supplemental Dental Insurance plans and we are going to touch on them briefly here so you can get a feel for what they are and which ones may benefit you. Keep in mind that different companies may refer to the plans by different names
Dental Discount Plans are a form of Supplemental Dental Insurance, which allows you to lower your net costs by using a large number of members in the plan to leverage a lower cost for all of the members. While this is not insurance by definition, in effect it allows you to present your membership card for the service rendered and the dentist will bill you at the pre-determined and discounted amount. These plans are quite inexpensive and can garnish a nice savings if you are having some dental work done.
There is also a Supplemental Dental Insurance called a Discounted
Student Dental Plan. These are typically offered by colleges because many students are entering the hallowed halls that are no longer covered by the plans they had while living at home. As long as the person remains a student they can qualify. For this discount, which may often include X-rays, preventative maintenance, fillings, fluoride treatments and emergency
dental care.
Another form of Supplemental Dental Insurance is a
Dental Insurance Preferred Provider Network. When you are using this type of plan there is usually a flat insurance fee for any and all services performed and then you pay the rest. This is a fairly simple and straightforward type of alternative that has gained an ever- increasing popularity in today’s world.
