It is good to know that you have help paying for preventive, minor, and major dental procedures. Humana Dental Insurance is one of the largest dental insurance companies in the U.S., with a network of 120,000 dentists and counting.

Another way Humana Dental helps plan members is by negotiating discounts that average 28% for dentists in the Humana Dental network. They also try to make it convenient for you to obtain answers to questions online, with an automated information phone line, and with customer service representatives.

Plan members also receive discounts of up to 45% on vision care and eyewear at more than 15,000 locations.

For employers, Humana Dental Insurance offers four plans: Traditional Preferred, which has the highest premiums and greatest flexibility and benefits; a Preferred Provider Organization (PPO), which has lower premiums and somewhat less flexibility than the traditional plan; Preventive Plus, which is a lower priced plan that still allows flexibility in choice of dental providers; and a Prepaid Dental Health Maintenance Organization which is a lower priced plan with restrictions on which dentists you may choose, except in the event of an emergency.

In terms of coverage, Humana Dental Insurance and the Traditional Preferred plan and the Preferred Provider Organization cover more basic and extensive procedures than Preventive Plus and the Prepaid DHMO. The latter two plans concentrate benefits on preventive and basic dental services, such as fillings, which are reimbursed at 50% after the deductible is met.

For the self-employed, or those who otherwise don’t have dental insurance, Humana Dental Insurance also offers HumanaOne Dental, which is a dental insurance program for individuals. Because dental health is necessary for overall health, Humana Dental strongly encourages preventive dental treatments. Plans cover two dental cleanings per year.

If your dentist is not part of the Humana Dental Insurance network, you can refer him or her to Humana Dental for an application to become part of the network. Or, if you have recently moved or don’t have a dentist, you can use Humana’s online dentist finder. You can also download the forms you need from their website. As with most dental plans, the plans offered by Humana Dental Insurance reward preventive and basic dental care in hopes that your teeth will remain healthy enough that you won’t need to undergo extensive dental procedures. Benefits for the Preventive Plus and DHMO plans are concentrated on cleanings, x-rays, fluoride treatments, and sealants.

These plans also cover pain relief for dental emergencies. For extensive dental procedures, the Traditional Preferred and PPO plans have the most generous coverage, and cover procedures that are not covered at all under the Preventive Plus and DHMO plans.
